Climbing Snowdon Mountain

For a long time I had ‘climb a mountain’ on my bucket list, almost 15 years, but only early this year in 2020 did I really do some research into what mountains you can climb and I discovered there are a lot more here in the UK than I thought. I didn’t really plan what one I would do first or when exactly I would do it but I had recently met a friend who is also just as passionate about travelling as I am. Due to coronavirus, any plans and ideas we had about travelling had flown out the window but it did give us a great opportunity to discover the 242,495 km² we have right here! (The area of the UK)

Having to give up freelance work while this is going on meant taking on a job in a shop and a post office. I’ve been working a lot and hadn’t got round to ticking off anything major from my bucket list but then August came around and the weather wasn’t too bad so myself and Jack planned it for the 15th August, he had done it before in winter and said he couldn’t see more than 5ft ahead of him at all times but on the day we got very lucky, the sun was shining all day long! We set off in the morning and arrived around 2 but we were sent another 3/4 miles down the road to the park and ride car park. We also got very lucky here because as we pulled in another car was leaving, they waved their ticket at us as they drove past and kindly gave it to us as they had paid till midnight, free parking woo!.

By the time we had got the bus up and sorted ourselves out it was 14:06 (we took a screenshot to remember this and time how long it took us). It took us 5 hours in total with a few stops but I’ll get to that. So we headed up and let’s just say I underestimated the incline at times, I don’t think I struggled as much as I thought I would, I’ve had problems with my knees for a few months now, but certain areas were harder than others and by the end of it I was knackered!. I did a little feet tour on my tiktok ‘@holly_on_holiday’ so you can see all the surfaces we climbed!.

On the way up we took a few breathers, stopped to take pictures or enjoy the view, we reached the top in about 2 hours 40. As it was very busy that day we had to wait in a queue to get to the top stone for about 20 minutes which did fly by and at least it gave us a chance to rest and take in what we had just done! The views at the top were absolutely gorgeous, I was so in awe I forgot to take pictures on the Polaroid camera I had lugged up but did get a few snaps and videos on my phone, you can see the full album at the side of this post!. Jack also got some great pictures of me with the amazing view of the mountains and the lake, I’ve attached them too.

Three hours or so had now passed so we headed down as quickly as we could to make it back to the last bus at 7:05. The beachy area most people stop at had shaded over so we chased the sun round to another part of the lake to take a dip and cool down. We got there at 6:30 which we thought would be plenty of time as it was very close to the end of the trail! Here we got some fun pictures and videos, swam a little then headed off just before ten to 7. After 5 minutes or so I think we realised at that pace we weren’t going to make it so we strapped up and started jogging. Around every corner there was another corner and by 7:02 we were sprinting, Jack even had to take my bag at one point so I could keep up. We saw the bus arrive and we’re going as fast as we could but as he reached the bus the driver closed the doors. Luckily he saw we had ran for it and pre paid for our return ticket so he reopened them and let us on, if he didn’t we would have had to walk that extra 3/4 miles back to the car on a narrow road!

Once we reached the car we changed out of our wet stuff and begun to head towards McDonald’s as we were starving and slightly dehydrated! This was at least another hour away and then after stuffing our faces we had another hour and a half back to where we were staying! We pretty much split off and went to sleep as soon as we got in, we were shattered! I surprisingly didn’t ache that much the next day, not as much as I thought I would. Instead I had a few bad tan lines (we completely forgot sun cream) a few bites and I was a tad dehydrated.

All in all I am so happy I done it and got to tick it off my Lost List. - If you wanna see what else is on there, look on ‘Abigail’s Articles’.

I would defiantly recommend doing the Pyg Trail, remember to take lots of water, sunglasses, sun cream, sugary snacks or energy bars and a camera!
